JOEY MAXIM V SUGAR RAY ROBINSON 1952

JOEY MAXIM V SUGAR RAY ROBINSON 1952

Official souvenir program for the World Light Heavyweight Championship fight between Joey Maxim (the holder) and Ray Robinson (the challenger), at the Yankee Stadium, New York City, on June 25 1952. This was the most famous fight of Maxim's career, originally scheduled for June 23 but postponed due to rain. By the time the fight took place New York City was sweltering in a record heat wave. Robinson built up a large points lead but gradually succumbed to the effects of hyperthermia before hitting the canvas at the close of the 13th. He managed to drag himself back to his corner but was unable to respond to the bell at start of the 14th, even though he only had to remain on his feet to win the fight. Maxim thus won by a TKO. This was the only time that Robinson was stopped in his 201-fight career.

Illustrated wrappers, sl soiled. A very good copy.
