Gooch played 118 Tests, scoring 8900 runs at an average in excess of 41. With an iron will and a fanatical fitness and work-ethic he played 1st Class cricket well into his 47th year. When he retired in the year 2000 he had made 21,087 runs in one-day cricket at first-class level and 44,841 other 1st Class runs, making him the most prolific run scorer in 1st Class cricket history, ahead even of the great Jack Hobbs.
