Notable Events
  • Australia retain the Ashes, winning the 1948 series in England 4-0, the first Test series in England to have five-day matches. The Australians score 721 in a day against Essex at Southend, and go through the tour undefeated. Their captain, Don Bradman, ends his Test career with a second-ball duck at The Oval, and a batting average of 99.94 – if he had scored 4 rather than 0 he would have averaged 100.
