  • A heated argument between the England captain, Mike Gatting, and the Pakistani umpire Shakoor Rana causes a day’s play to be lost in the December 1987 Faisalabad Test.
  • Graeme Hick completes 1,000 first-class runs in the 1988 English season before the end of May.
  • After being “blackwashed” in the previous two Wisden Trophy series, England finally manage a draw against the West Indies in June 1988. They lose the remaining four Tests in a series, having selected four captains in the five Tests.
  • Nottinghamshire’s Franklyn Stephenson becomes the last player to do the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in a season in England, completing it in style with two centuries and taking 11 wickets in his final match of the 1988 season
  • England’s planned 1988-89 tour of India is called off due to India objecting to the “South African connections” of some of the players, notably the captain, Graham Gooch, and vice-captain John Emburey.
