  • World Series Cricket is launched in November 1977 in Australia on non-Test grounds using drop-in pitches in front of sparse crowds. However a day-night cricket experiment under floodlights proves a success. World Series Cricket players are ruled ineligible for selection for official international matches.
  • In February 1978, at Wellington, England, needing 137 to win, are bowled out for 64 by New Zealand. It is New Zealand’s first Test win after 48 years and 48 matches of trying.
  • In the summer of 1978 Tests in England are sponsored for the first time by Cornhill Insurance.
