Notable Events
  • In September 1978 India tour Pakistan for the first series between the two neighbours since 1961-62. Pakistan wins the three-Test series 2-0.
  • England beat an Australian side, weakened by the absence of their Packer players, 5-1 in the 1978-79 Ashes series in Australia.
  • For its second season, World Series Cricket gains access to Test grounds and attracts big crowds to its day-night one-day games. Matches are also staged in New Zealand and the Caribbean. In May 1979 Kerry Packer agrees a truce with the Australian Cricket Board and disbands World Series Cricket.
  • West Indies win the 1979 World Cup beating England by 92 runs in the final at Lord’s.
