San Serriffe is a fictional island nation created for April Fools' Day, 1977, by staff at the Guardian newspaper. An elaborate description of the nation, using puns and plays on words relating to typography (such as "sans serif" and "Port Baskerville"), was reported as legitimate news, apparently fooling many readers who did not understand there was a reason that the island was also known as Hoaxe. This is the story of golf on the island and particularly at the Port Baskerville Golf Club.

Large 8vo. [40]pp. Original marbled boards and morocco leather spine. Title-page vignette by John O'Connor. There are two copies of the folding map (one loose). Various ephemeral items contained in an end-pocket inside the back cover. Label to front gives the title as "The Britherhood: Early Golf in the South Seas". No.16 of a Limited Edition of 150 copies, signed by the author. This copy belonged to the golf course designer Fred Hawtree and there is a gift inscription from the author to Hawtree to a front endpaper. Fine condition.
