The History of the Commonwealth Games

30th July 2026

It’s surprising to learn that John Astley Cooper first proposed what has become the Commonwealth Games in 1891: 5 years before the Modern Olympics. AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS 1926 (CROSSING THE CHANNEL) CRICKET PHOTOGRAPH

Original Press photograph showing four members of the Australian 1926 Ashes cricket touring party on the deck of a ship. The players are Andrews, Bardsley, Ryder and Richardson - and it is believed that the other two people are members of the accompanying Press. A handwritten note on the reverse states that they were crossing the channel, but we are not certain of that.

20 x 25cm. There are a number of closed tears to edges (with neat tape to reverse) and a couple of corners are knocked off. However, the main image is still very good.
