Early reminiscences of a sports reporter. Henry Rose worked on the Daily Express and was one of the most flamboyant of journalists and he would drive to football games in his Jaguar. In the late 1950s only one of the Manchester United players had a car, and that was a Morris Minor. In February 1958 Rose was one of 23 passengers who died in the Munich Air Crash. Along with eight Manchester United players and three club officials, a total of eight prominent British journalists, including Rose, Alf Clarke, and Don Davies were killed. Henry Rose was such a big character that over 4000 people went to his funeral, and taxi-drivers in Manchester refused to take payment for anyone going to or from it.
First edition. 8vo. 144pp. There are a few neat ink underlinings to text. Dustwrapper, rubbed and chipped to edges with only about half the spine remaining. A good condition book in a rare but poor dustwrapper. Signed and dedicated by Rose to his "very good friend George Sinfield", dated 1943. Sinfield was a leading trade unionist and sports-writer.
