James's classic work traces the fruition of national West Indian consciousness through the development of cricket, where what happened inside the boundary affected life beyond it.

First Edition. 8vo. 256pp. Pictorial dust-wrapper, lightly rubbed to edges with a few light marks. A very good copy of this seminal cricket book. Ownership stamp to front free endpaper, underneath which James has inscribed and signed "With best wishes from C.L.R. James. With happy memories of Northern Cricket Society, Queens Hotel, Leeds, Oct. 23rd 1963." James had been invited to attend The Northern Cricket Society annual dinner and had made a Toast alongside ex-England cricket captain R.E.S. Wyatt. The menu card for the dinner is slipped in.
