THE GAME OF CROQUET

Obscure and early booklet, unattributable and undatable by Drazin, with no comparative copies in the holdings of the main university libraries. The copy at Oxford has the same title but only calls for 52pp and attributes authorship to "Game" as does the British Library copy. Neither is able to identify either author, publisher or date. This copy has as a frontispiece an amateurishly hand water-coloured wood engraving of Eglinton Castle Croquet, a version of the game, plus 4 further plates. Also contains numerous illustrations of croquet equipment, diagrams of plays and layouts, plus several woodcuts in the text.

Small 812mo. 56pp + [1] blank. Yellow endpapers, a little rubbed with small, ink, previous owner's inscription to front free. Internally clean and well maintained, some light foxing to occasional leaves. Original 'Greyish purplish Red' limp cloth, edges slightly thready, front illustrated with gilt figure of lady croquet player. Some marking to covers but overall very good. [Drazin, A21(c)]
