It’s surprising to learn that John Astley Cooper first proposed what has become the Commonwealth Games in 1891: 5 years before the Modern Olympics. The plan was to hold a sports competition every four years “as a means of increasing goodwill and understanding of the British Empire”. Committees were set up throughout the Empire to […]

A compilation of East African golfing records, particularly dealing with Kenya. Histories of Kenya's golf clubs, with lists of past captains and presidents, fill much of the book. There are also articles comparing golf in Kenya with the sport in Britain and on the visit of the professionals Hagen and Kirkwood in 1937. This scarce work was written at the height of the Mau Mau uprising against the colonial powers responsible for introducing the sport, and the President of the Kenya Golf Union was murdered shortly after publication. The advertisments which feature throughout the book are also of interest.

8vo. 288pp. Numerous b/w photographs. Original maroon cloth, gilt lettering to f/c and spine. Obit note announcing the death of G.L.G. Shaw, President of The Kenya Golf Union, pasted to front end-paper, light spotting to titlepage. A good copy and uncommon. [D&M, 21370]
