The standard text on curling, published under the authority of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club. The work is divided into three parts: the first section deals with the origin of the sport and the study of the "stones"; the second part covers curling during the years 1800-1838, the birth of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club and the curluing "furth" of Scotland (England, France, Canada, Russia, etc); while part three deals with equipment, the science, the art of curling and "Bibliotheca Curliana". 

First Edition. 8vo. xiv + [2] + 440pp + [16] publisher's catalogue at the back. Portrait frontis. (Marquis of Breadalbane with hunting dog), engraved titlepage, 14 full-page engraved plates, numerous text illustrations, chapter head and tail-pieces, illuminated initials. Internally very good, clean and bright with minor foxing to prelims only. Red gilt embossed morocco spine, heavily rubbed with some small chips to foot of spine. Original illustrated paper covered boards also a little rubbed. Overall fair/good condition.
