On a dodgy wicket, WG Grace and Gloucestershire were skittled for 44 in their first innings, but made a brave attempt to score 378 to win, Bateman-Champain hitting 113 not out. Cuttell took 12 wickets in the match for Lancashire. Jessop took 8 for 54 for Gloucestershire on the first day.
