Autobiography of possibly the finest ever English sportsman. Charles Burgess Fry (1872-1956). He captained Sussex and England at cricket, represented Southampton and England as a football full-back (including playing in the FA Cup Final of 1902) and set a world long jump record of 23ft.
1st edition, third impression. 8vo. 423pp. Frontispiece, 12 plates. Dust-wrapper, lightly rubbed. Gutters are a little weak. Good condition. Signed by Fry to fly-leaf, with an inscription - "I wrote this book and I write my name in it at pleasant Taunton with unusual alacrity for a pleasant fellow". A typed note is slipped in which confirms that this book was presented in 1954 to R.A. (Ronald Arthur) Roberts, the cricket writer and journalist who worked, at the time, for the Bristol Evening World. The note is signed in ink by Eric Hill, who played cricket for Somerset from 1947-51 and continued to be linked closely to the club for most of his life.
