A very important early book on athletics, first published in 1868, which includes a history of the sport - many new athletics clubs were starting up during this period (often associated with cricket and football clubs). The author was a member of the prestigious Amateur and London Athletic clubs. Also includes a chapter on the management of an athletics meeting, instructional sections on each discipline, a directory of clubs and, finally, an excellent statistical section (fully updated from the first edition).

Second edition. Soft cloth-covered boards. 8vo. 94pp + adverts. Bookplate to front pastedown. There were further editions published in 1877 and 1880. Very good condition.
