James Pycroft (1813-95) was a pioneer of cricket research and in the opinion of Ashley-Cooper his efforts in this direction surpassed those of earlier commentators like Boxall, Lambert and Nyren. This classic book on cricket technique, the first of its kind, is one of the game's great literary masterpieces, covering many key aspects of the game including its origins, the rise of the Hambledon club, I Zingari, Surrey CCC, the impact of gambling, together with tutorials on batting, bowling and fielding. The first edition was published in 1851 and there were eight further editions up to 1887.

Seventh edition revised. 12mo. vi+370pp. Original green boards, lightly rubbed. Some intermittent foxing inside, mainly to early pages. Good condition.
