Charles Clapcott was an enthusiastic historian of golf and its rules. He was also one of the foremost golf book collectors of his day. This book represents a definite study of the early rules and the first attempt to trace the evolution of golf rules. The clubs, and dates of Rules included, are as follows: Royal & Ancient, St Andrews (1754); Hon. Company of Edinburgh Golfers (1775); Aberdeen (1783); Crail Golfing Soc. (1786); Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society (1802); Hon. Company of Edinburgh Golfers (1809); Glasgow G.C. (1810); R& A, St Andrews (1812); E.B.G.S (1814); for the Gold Medal of the E.B.G.S. (1816); for golf on the Links of Aberdeen (1815); Laws of Golf, as revised by Blackheath G.C. (1828); Burntisland G.C. (1828); St Andrews (1829); Musselburgh (1829 & 1834); E.B.G.S. (1838); R&A G.C. of St Andrews, as played over the Links (1842); Blackheath (1844); Thistle (1824); Perth Golfing Soc. (1825); Royal Perth Golfing Soc.
