THE ABC OF CROQUET…

Historical and instructional guide to croquet in the ABC series. Written by then Major, Arthur Mainwaring who in some 4 years time as Lt. Col. would be unsuccessfully court martialed for cowardice in allowing his men to retreat from the town of St. Quentin after 4 days of constant German bombardment, despite collapsing twice he marched at the head of the 400 men. He provided the inspiration for Sir Henry Newbolt's poem 'The Toy Band: A Song of the Greatest Retreat'

1st edition. 32mo. [iv] 110pp. 2 pages adverts to rear. 1 court diagram to prelims. Internally clean and tight, slight browning, small ink spot to fore-edge. Croquet Association stamp to upper right of front free end paper. In original decorative red cloth, mild rubbing. Titles faded to spine, some rubbing to ends but not frayed. Overall very good.
