AN ANGLER

Early 19th-century reflections on coarse fishing and country life, including a good chapter on village cricket and developments in the game. The cricket chapter relates the doings of the cricket club in the village of Chesterton (Oxfordshire), including details of players, and also of the arrival in the village of William Fennex, the great English cricketer. Fennex stayed for the season, coaching the players and dictating his reminiscences. Padwick records the book in the Suffolk section, believing the village to be Eye - but this does not seem to be the case.

8vo. 318pp. Marbled boards with green leather spine and corners. Some rubbing to spine and boards consistent with age of book. Good condition.
