This comprehensive, two volume work consists mainly of articles culled from the Licensed Victuallers' Gazette. They represent a detailed history of fights and fighters between 1727 and 1889, from the period of Jack Figg and Ned Sutton through the era of Sayers and Heenan to the days of Jem Mace, J.L.Sullivan and Jem Smith. The volumes are profusely illustrated with portraits taken from old, and often little-known prints.

Each 8vo. xxxiv + 334pp / 529pp. Text illustrations throughout both vols. Original crimson cloth: Volume 1: cloth soiled with ring-marks and splashes, end-papers and pastedowns foxed; Volume 2: cloth soiled, edges of spine split, end-papers and pastedowns foxed. A servicable set of this important boxing title. [Hartley, 968]
