Lord's, July 2 - 4, 1896. Oxford University won by 4 wickets. WG Grace jnr, Jessop, Warner, Leveson-Gower and Foster were all playing, but they were put in the shade by Hartley and Smith of Oxford. Hartley, who took 11 wickets in the match, captured 8 for 161 in the first innings to keep Cambridge's lead within bounds and Smith, an outstanding England footballer, scored 132 to secure the win.
